Democracy Evolves @ KGP

In the recently concluded student body(Gymkhana) elections at IIT Kharagpur, all the top posts, except VP, went uncontested and the lonely fight was won by a margin of around one-third of total votes polled. You must be thinking that this institute is blessed in having such exceptional people as their representatives! You might even be thinking that in a place full of talents, how much exceptional these people must be in order to invite no challenge. Well, they're not. Not exceptional. What's exceptional is- KGP's democracy(?). And, it has evolved further in its singualrity this year.

A key feature of this democratic setup is absence of the right to freedom of expression. You can't speak against the system- its sacred! The gods may bedamn you! In fact, more than the gods, the common people are the source of fear. Fear- mind it! You may murmur but you can't say in public, you can't say it aloud. Who knows you might be subjected to all sort of punishments! You may become outcast of 'A' for aloof block! You might loose your candidature for the innumerous coveted posts! But, don't forget these are the people who are going to carry out the 'Paritrana' of this country. Keep it in your mind that these are the 'Rang De Basanti'-brand leaders of tommorrow. And, their leaders- they're divine creatures! Don't ever dare not to follow their directives. Neither questioning the righteousness of it!

There're many things that IIT's have given to the world and our country. IT revolution is one classic example. There may be controversies on these things being a contribution by IITs alone. But, everyone will agree to its contribution in terms of the great number of enterpreneurs and engineers it has produced over the years. It has made contributions at many other levels too, which are not visible. Rather, they were not made visible. It has been rippling subcultures for a long time. There have been many literary contributions, too. Apart from Chetan Bhagat and Sandipan Deb, there have been a good number of terms which were originally a part of IIT lingo and are now used almost everywhere. My endeavour here, is to bring to light a significant contribution that it has made to politics and governance which has not been noticed till date.

The students here are divided into a number of 'Halls of Residence' which are not only residential units but also administrative and cultural. They're divided, not just distributed. Each hall has its council, at the top of which is the Hall President(HP). The student body, which is known as Technology Students' Gymkhana, consists of the nominees of these HPs. The nominees which are later formally elected by a formal voting procedure, to ratify the control and authority of these handful of people. The arrangement under which all this happens is called- 'Pact'. This word-'pact' is undoubtedly the most impactful term of the KGP lingo. This arrangement is highly efficient and it has very few leaks. The nominees are decided on individual preference and pleasure and are agreed upon by others well in advance, almost two-three months and even more. The system through which these nominees become eligible is compact- it doesn't leave a common man a chance of ever standing in the elections. There're proper channels in which he must have spent a significant time and he must have done enough to please the people who matter.

This time the results were much more obvious than previous years. Six of the seven, which were parties to the affair, joined hands. They had victory written all over their walls the day they joined hands. But, yet they waited for the formal ratification. That evening and i were witness to the celebration party that followed. The spirits involved yelled- 'Conquered!'. There were numerous murmurs- 'Injustice Done!'. I took that as 'Democracy Evolved!'.

  1. you are rambling !
Really good topic. Please edit and post again.
    talk about
a)How nomination/representative election fails to serve the purpose.
b)If individuals are allowed to contest (which by the way is the system in 1st year, and still they are plenty of uncontested posts..), how it'll work better for everyone.
c)How the GSec ACTUALLY functions, once elected (the skewed division of SF heads etc)...

  2. Thanks for ur review.
I accept ur points...but there are so many issues within this framework that i have thought of covering the other issues in separate blogs. I did cut the matter short by avoiding these topics.
    Thanks again for ur suggestions!

  4. There are certain basic features that must be in the system:
    i)The freedom of candidature
    ii)The freedom of voter's will.
Well, there're many other things that need to be elaborated. I'll try to do this soon.
Thanks for ur interest kashi miyan!

  5. What u have written is a gospel and is in resonance with my views...these so called king-makers are the biggest 'Chuhiyas' who think themselves to be great politicians...all we can do is laugh at their stupidity as the realm of politics starts where the horizon of their thoughts end...Well a tremendous blog indeed..

  6. @rohit i dont know the level of politics but all i can say that at any point of time these king-makers can destroy your social life to a large extent atleast for couple of years and who can be a better example of that than our own vivek.ask him about his level of involvment in politics in his first year pertaining to his dreams and ambitiions at kgp and the follow up.

  8. Yes, you are right Mr anonymous. But, it must be accepted that this system has reached this level of stupidity just because there has been a complete absence of the voices which reflect the truth- which voice the people.

  9. @Mr Anonymous - first of all its a pity that you dare to make such a strong statement against me and not even dare to disclose ur identity...and as far as destroying my social life is concerned, I challenge anyone at present if u can do it, then show me. Dont just talk big !!! You can destroy the social life of only those who aspire for power...and power here at KGP is enjoyed by filthy crooks and thats a fact..Exceptions may and do exist...
However I would be glad to meet u in person Mr Anonymous and I must admit I WAS FRIGHTENED (You Scumbag)

  12. @Mr anonymous..you know it pretty well that there has been a channelised system of candidature even....unless and until you keep doing all things required for being a proper candidate, you cant stand....and also that ppl are not going to support you just becoz they havent opened up....they cant still think out of the logics propagated by the system when it comes to the candidates for their own hall-elections.....and if you keep doing all that to make urself eligible, you're going to be one of them in ur mindset. The point is not about getting in the system to change it, but to change the people's approach first and then there will be enough resistance for the system.

  13. @Abhi...
Not every struggle leads to victory but that doesn't allow us to escape from our duty to struggle.

  14. Its definitely a great topic.

But if you want to change the system, you have to be inside it. Here system means the powers of respective halls, who decide over whom to vote and support.

Otherwise, personally, I feel the blog to be influenced anti-establishment thoughts and intimidation on certain issues.

    Keep going Happa. Keep writin.

  15. vivek i dont agree with ur views....firstly i know wat u urself tried in ur 1st year....so better we dont talk abt it...ur blog seems as a frustration of ur lost and broken aspirations....so better not talk abt it...also..if u r so very concerned with system of demcracy then why dint u try n change it......ur words seem hollow as always....

rohit prateek ...i m completely aware of wat contribution u made to the democracy in the hall elections.....i also know abt ur character as well...so dont show urself to be ideal...u have been the biggest hypocrite i've ever seen.....abt the "kingmakers" u talked abt...they have been very successful in their purpose and are atleast majority in the campus will agree that they r better than u in every resect....so better shut ur mouth

waise humko anonymous hone ka koi mann nahi hai....lekin mera apna koi blog account nahi hai....khair kabhi mere se milna ho to apne wing se saamne dekhna humko hall mein aksar dekh loge.....

  16. @ Mr Anonymous! Your words seem as powerful as the echelons you belong to!
You preferred making personal comments rather than noting the issue that was raised in the blog. You seem to have dropped down just to make personal comments which is another great feature of the kgp culture you're completely engrossed in.
I'm not going to discuss what i did when and how much was right.....if you're so focussed abt that, you're always welcome @ C-224 which must be close enough to ur room!

  17. @ MR ANONYMOUS: First of all this blog allows you to write comment using ur name but it seems that ur common sense is not that strong...and don't u claim that u could not reveal ur identity as the blog doesn't allow this coz u could always have mentioned it in the comment itself

And as far as my being hypocrite is concerned and also about my character, first of all u tell me ur identity and I'll reveal every facet of ur character...dont give hints my friend, tell me who u r

I would have loved to talk about hall elections but I wont make any comments until I know who the person himself is

Also check the meaning of 'hypocrite'..I can very well tell u how much cali it takes to take any post especially in the hall (no offence to any office bearers) I dont want to enter in another controversy....u just tell me who u r and then I'll see to it that the world is made aware of ur good deeds

Jinke ghar kud sheeshe ke hon..woh doosron ke ghar pe pathar nahi maara karte...I have nothing to lose u care about urself
